Health Occupational for Students of America (HOSA)

The Health Occupational for Students of America (HOSA) is an advanced afterschool club that stems off from the Healthcare Academy giving the opportunity for striving students to participate in certification classes after school at Norwalk Community College and Norwalk Hospital.

What is HOSA?

HOSA is a national student organization sponsored by the US Department of Education, Health Science Education Division.

HOSA's goal is to encourage and support all the Health Occupations Instructors and students to join and become actively involved in the Allied Health Education.

Mission

HOSA's mission is to enhance the delivery of compassionate quality healthcare by providing opportunities for building knowledge base, leadership skills, development of Medical Science Education, and therefore, helping students to serve the needs of the healthcare community.

Our Chapter

Since the creation of the Brien McMahon HOSA Chapter in September 2016, we have grown our membership by over 200%.

One of our initiatives includes running four blood drives a year, which allows HOSA members to manage and work directly with the American Red Cross (ARC) to advertise and host the drives. Since HOSA's management of the drives ARC has collected more donations at our school, which has translated into many more lives saved.

HOSA Experiences

Conferences

Twenty members went to the State Leadership conference in 2018, which qualified seven HOSA members for the Dallas international Competition. Two members made it through the first round from 100s of competitors to the semifinals and eight received medals!

Although they did not win, the experience was amazing and they look forward to competing again in Disney, 2019.

Events

Fall Leadership Conference - The fall Leadership Conference consists of training and activities to help grow the leadership skills of local chapter officers or motivated members.

State Leadership Conference (SLC) - Each spring, HOSA members participate in the National Competitive Events program. They compete against each other for gold, silver, and bronze medals in a variety of events. This is the largest conference at the state level!

National Leadership Conference (NLC) - Held every June in different venues around the country, over six thousand of the best HOSA members from the country travel to the NLC and compete in the National Events Program. This year, it will be held in Dallas, Texas.
