BMHS Marine Science Students Restoring Norwalk Shores, One Oyster at a Time

Brien McMahon High School students are helping restore Norwalk shores, one oyster at a time!
Working alongside The Maritime Aquarium and Copps Island Oysters, students are helping to establish small-scale oyster beds along the shoreline of Veteran’s Memorial Park.
Using shellfish aquaculture techniques under the guidance of a fourth-generation oyster farmer, students are helping to grow oysters throughout the year before relocating them offshore to support the long-term growth of natural oyster beds.
Throughout the project, students are also collecting important environmental data on shoreline and oyster health, including vegetation density, shoreline erosion, oyster growth, and reef development.
This hands-on learning experience not only gives students valuable marine science experience, but also supports future shoreline restoration efforts in Norwalk.
Students in the Marine Science Pathway across Norwalk Public Schools are regularly participating in hands-on learning experiences and partnering with local organizations to better understand and protect their local environment.
