7 BMHS Students Honored for CT Lt. Governor’s Computing Challenge
Brien McMahon High School
On June 4th, Brien McMahon High School students participated in an award ceremony at the InfoSys Technology Hub in Hartford for the Connecticut Lt. Governor’s Computing Challenge.
The theme of the Challenge is "Coding for Good" and welcomes participation from all Connecticut students, either individually or as part of a school team. The goal of the competition is to build interest in computer science in CT, to increase the number of computer science majors, and to support and energize computer science teachers.
Congratulations to Roman Surena-Mattson, Ryen Waters, Kenneth Oliva Lopez, Dinyar Unvala, David Smith, Jasmine Barajas and Aaron Terron. These 7 students were recognized for their outstanding projects. This honor is a testament to their hard work and coding knowledge.

The Jackson Laboratories Achievement Award were given to the following submissions:
- David Smith: David's Coding For Good
Paula Medina, BMHS Computer Science teacher was recognized for her teaching and coaching expertise. The competition had close to 400 participants with BMHS submitting over 100 entries. This shows the strength of the BMHS coding community.
This year’s challenge asked Connecticut students in grades 3 through 12 to create applications designed to inspire health and wellness for all, and submit their designs through one of three options: concept, prototype, or development. The 2023-24 school year was the fifth successive year the computing challenge was held.
At the award ceremony, there were multiple speakers from the industry along with Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz. In addition to the certificates, prizes were awarded with some BMHS students winning cash awards and a drone!
